Forgiveness – key to healing

February 18, 2011

Does time really heal all wounds? Actually, time can’t do it. Something else is required for healing.
For instance, did you know that:

  • The current trouble in Northern Ireland began 450 years ago?
  • Communities in the mid-Southern US still deal with the after-effects of slavery, and local officials still spend business hours addressing the displacement of black families more than 100 years ago?
  • Only recently did Germany officially apologize for the holocaust?
  • A “forgiveness garden” in Beirut Lebanon is being built (mostly by women), partly in response to issues stemming from the first crusade which took place a thousand years ago?

Forgiveness is worth grappling with and coming to understand well. It’s one of the most practical ways to bring the divine into the human scene. If we can learn to forgive, just think how much happier and freer we’ll be as a world. Time does not heal. Forgiveness heals.
